Module 6

CMS Assessment
Following on from the module I have chosen to create an assessment task with Google Classroom, my CMS of choice.
My Assessment is a development of a compulsory assessment students must complete as part of a GSCE Music qualification. In order to achieve their GCSE in music they must complete: 2 compositions, 2 performances and a listening assessment. This assessment is linked to a composition which students create in their first year of the course. If they choose to, they can in the second year of the course, complete the composition and submit for their final coursework. This assessment is therefore an extension of this required composition element and has a direct link to the national qualification.

The assessment comprises of two parts Students upload their composition for feedback inline with actual GCSE criteria and have space within the assessment to self-assess their work and explain their process. This can then be used by myself as the class teacher to have inside knowledge into their thinking in the composition process and their understanding, which they may not yet be able to express creatively themselves. This in turn will allow me to separate their comprehension of the tasks with their technical ability in composition. I.e. I understand I should have done this, but currently I do not have the ability and level of practice to make it work in reality. The document can be found here, and my screencast below.

Formative Assessment Design V2.0
The revisions of my Formative Assessment Design have this week focused on the “nuts and bolts” of how the assessment will be created and the instructions given to students. Despite all of my research into the various web 2.0 tech available to help with my baseline assessment I have decided to stay with an online assessment and handing in process but audio clips live in the classroom as opposed to embedded. Check out my revision below to find out why!

The full document can be found here if you prefer.

  1. Hi Becky,

Thank you for your screencast of your composition assessment. I thought you did a great job of explaining the benefits of using Google Classroom as a Content Management System. For example, one of the benefits is that once students submit their work, the document turns into a “read only” document. This means that students cannot make any more changes.

As far as the self-assessment/teacher assessment, I thought the lay out was great. You gave students the opportunity to explain why they met each criteria without focusing on giving themselves a grade. Also, the color coded materials really stood out as for what the students needed to fill in. Using “Red” as almost as a stop sign saying “Do Not Touch” was great.

I know that there was a lot of material to cover in only two minutes. I’m glad that the second screencast was increased to three minutes. You gave great directions of what was expected but I was a little confused on the standard. I know that you said that it met the standard and was linked to it.

Great job Becky! I am looking forward to the final product.

    • Thank you Marc, I have added further detail to the blog post explaining the assessment and it’s link to standards and the national curriculum for music. I realise this is a qualification specific to the UK so I have tried to make this as explicit as possible! Becky
